To plant a garden

I love this quote. It’s presently my background image because I enjoy it that much. I found on Instagram somewhere (I forget which account-oops, bad blogger!), and I truly love positivity and this quote here, this one right here, embraces my sentiments exactly. Nowadays it’s a fast paced world, everything soars by at record speed. In the words of my favorite teenage delinquent and yours, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around every once in a while it’ll pass you by.” - Ferris Bueller Dear God, please tell me no one here is so young they don't know this without googling(!!). This message gives me a gusto for go getting while taking a few steps back to breathe and be. Gardening, while not my forte, is hugely therapeutic for everyone I know who does it so I’m channeling that good good zen zen when I think of this.  Feel inspired by today and get excited for tomorrow, love bugs. mkh

Spring Forward

In Florida we are not often unable to get outside due to the weather prohibiting us. Unlike our northern counterparts and Midwest comrades, we don’t get inundated with icy roads, below freezing temps, and snow blocked streets. Yet, with our own winter climate woes, the idea of hibernation just feels like the natural solution.  Maybe it's partly due to cold/flu season and everyone is miserable with the bronchitis, the sinusitis, and "just a nasty head cold".  Come on, we all know or are the someone with the lingering head cold that just won't stop because people don't wash their hands or don't cough into their elbow like decent humans and it's brutal.  Ugh, woof just recapping it. But I'm ready for the light of day to stay longer into the evenings and for the urge to get out and enjoy the great outdoors to be in full swing!  I enjoy this time of year in Florida because, well, who wouldn’t?  We live where other people vacation and retire to. See ab...

January health was rough

*This is a post I wrote at the end of last month and am just getting around to posting :) I’m exhausted. Not to be all redundant on feeling crummy, but I am just readddyyyyy to not feel headachy and mucus-y and cough-y and be short fused and impatient. I’m struggling, y’all. I am a doer and have so much I like to accomplish in a given day and this is just the pits. Okay, okay. I’m whining again and I am blessed it’s just a winter bug and this too shall pass. It’s just weird how this time of year goes with the ickiness of being sick. Dark, gloomy, overall feeling of hibernation; it’s all a perfect storm for being “under the weather”. One of my creative writing professors would ding me for such an obvious metaphor/cliche association. Yet, still true. I have formed a rash. That’s a newly developed aspect of my ailments. I am allergic to the antibiotic I was prescribed and ugh. God bless those with ailments regularly resulting in hives. I am so uncomfortabl...

Ideas to Reboot

We all need a little reboot sometimes and I am no different. I have a few things that always put a fresh pep in my step: -A new lipstick-bright and wildly colored usually -a komboocha or a cup of matcha green tea, depending which ice already at the time of said needed reboot in the day -journaling ideas or making a list of to-do’s, both for necessities and for aspirations. Writing is still my numero uno and it’s centered me since I was a kid. Don’t see this one going anywhere. -recalling my 10 areas of meaning I’ve decided on -cuddling my Roni girl. She is the sweetest, most ferocious fur baby and she gives absolute love -walks, I love getting out and doing a quick stroll or longer as time permits -getting into bed and enjoying cozy blankets and a good show -reciting a few positive mantras I hold dear I’m simple in my approach to a lot these days. These things I do to remind myself of that mentality are just the fix I need to rekindle my passion and fire for o...

Sick and Stir Crazy

I am going stir crazy from being cooped up in the house sick. Like, okay, sometimes when you get a little run down and take a little TLC down time and it feels good and let’s you get back to new in no time. Well, I’m talking the hacking, coughing, sneezing, headachy, clogged ears, sore throat, oh perfect timing because I have a zillion things to do kind of down. Ick. I got up yesterday and started doing stuff in my kitchen and had to lay back down almost instantly because it just was, as pop culture says, “too soon”. Anyhow, I’m trying not to whine too much and appreciate having something that will pass and focus on resting now to get better ASAP. I took a small walk outside today and that was hard but good. Hard because I haven’t been keeping up with my usual routine; I typically walk 3 miles at minimum a day and have now missed a chunk of time off between having a little bug right after holidays, Florida having freakishly cold weather making it unbearable to be out in...

Maaaaaybe

It's starting.   My anxiety is at peak.   Maybe the new season, which leads us into the end of the year chaos which I love, yet initially I feel slight panic.   It passes but I've noticed the last few years this happens. Maybe because we're getting married in a week and while we're so excited and we're prepared, mentally and logistically, it's less than a week!   So much done!   So much to do!   We're getting married!   Eek! Maybe because Pepper is winding down.   She's still okay; she's eating and not in blatant discomfort.   But she's a 14 year old lab with muscular atrophy and a couple bumps we need to get checked out.   Her spirit is strong and present but she's also tired and more feeble.   We're seesawing a terribly difficult situation and trying to navigate as thoughtfully as we can.   I think our hope and prayer is to get through the wedding and hopefully the holidays before thinking further. Maybe becaus...

Annual Prefall Funk

Image Via It's landed; a throbby kind of headache, slight aches and shivers, and a general feeling of bleh happens every year around the same time and it has hit the Munterhegan household.  It arrives right after the first couple weeks of school begin and just before actual joys of fall start. I first noticed it sneaking in at the grocery store.  People every aisle have been sneezing with heavy gusto and powerful spray free flowing from within them.  It's not like it's a rude sneeze, but rather the uncontrollably loud, exerting type.  It comes from the bottom of your being and is often snotty too.  Ick. Home computer heavy workday ahead, folks.  Attempting to kick it fast and get back to usual pace soon.  Also, totally venting here about a measly cold but thinking lovingly of Texas friends and what they are experiencing.  May recovery and rebuilding be plentiful and steadfast. Happy Monday, love bugs.  Be well. mkh

Grand Evening

My ideal way to decompress at the end of any given day: -create healthy comfort food -give my hair a good wash -lather on a charcoal mask -do a nasal rinse -post up on the couch -catch up on the news and update my to-do list and grocery list Absolute heavenly recharge, folks.   Boomshakalaka.  How do you decompress and simultaneously amp up a day to come? Pepper feels me mkh

Charcoal + cucumbers = chaos dissolved

Let me tell you what... I love charcoal masks!  I've read about them often and was instantly intrigued.  I have super sensitive skin so I'm weary of trying new things and typically stick to what I know works and is effective.  The salesgirl at the store shared she has senstive skin as well and she couldn't speak high enough about this product.  In short, very pleased and will be adding it to my self care, beauty routine.  Only next time, I plan to go full on home spa with serene music, cucs on the ol'peepers, and will use the 15 minutes for a thorough bout of meditation.  Boomshakalaka. For reference, I used this face mask found at Ulta .  I learned of this particular one through Kallie over at But First, Coffee.  Love her reviews on products! Any products you were pleasantly surprised to try and love? mkh

Booch, key lime pie, and an editor walk into a bar...

This was my afternoon the other day; I had a lengthy editing project, a shorter editing project, whipped up a fresh key lime pie because #summer, and an afternoon booch is what I crave these days.  I have to admit, while initially skeptical of the ol'kombucha craze, I am now a believer.  After much researching and asking questions from health gurus I admire, I jumped in, found a flavor I love, and as previously mentioned, I happily enjoy one a day.  I usually do so in the afternoon for an energy pick me up and prelude to an evening workout.  It's odd; while energizing yes, I also get a zen like feeling and it mellows me.  I'll take two cases for a million feel goods, Alex! Hope your Thursday is productive and insightful and your gusto is strong to seek Friday ambitions.  Happy living, friends! MKH

Sundays are for...

Nutrients and self care. With Sunday being an all intended day of rest, I like to reserve at least a portion of time for just that.   I like to rejuvenate and replenish so an extra glass of kale tonic hits the mark these days. Writing. Setting up blog posts for me personally, writing for clients, scribbling out another chapter of a book, Sundays are most definitely for writing. Shaking and baking. Sundays bring an air about them that's just meant for prepping at least some parts of your world for the week.   Laundry catch-up, food preparations, outline intentions and commitments and goals to achieve for the week ahead. Faith and sweat. I personally like to get out for a nice walk.   A hearty blood pumping, sweaty walk.   Somehow the sweat always leads to the faith part.   My mind naturally clears and I always find clarity for faith and grace alike.   This might be my favorite combination. Loving on lovies. Spend time with those...

6 minute power yoga

I'm giving this lesson a go this week:   Really hoping it wakes me up for a new yoga journey.   I've had spurts of yoga appreciation over the last 10 years-took a graded class in college, have attended gym sessions with a friend, followed a random DVD program--just always studying the art of it. I'm eager to see how a regular routine of it will enrich my days.   For me, the best case scenario of outcomes: -better breathing to help with overall respiratory irritants -clearer mind, renewed focus -getting back to flexibility -overall physical strength improvement I just hope I do better at not analyzing my grocery list or to do items while in child's pose.   Namaste!

Nailed It

I have been trying to eat clean for my daily life. Don't get confused, I'm not some die hard believer of that silly saying, "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Umm, clearly whoever said this, has never had shrimp and grits from the heart of New Orleans. Or raviolis in Little Italy. Or 4 Rivers BBQ. You get the point. But I am conscious of my day to day and the need for healthy eating and living and all that jazz. For example, I don't have a cookie just cause it's a cookie and it's there. I'm not wasting the calories on any ol'choc chip, know what I mean? Some days I fail, some days I soar. I work in an office environment where it's always someone's birthday, therefore there's always someone's cake. And if that doesn't happen, like clockwork at 3pm each day, I hit the crash and feel like if I do not get a sugar fix as soon as like yesterday, I will lose my mind. Basically, I turn into my Poppy and "just n...

Self Evaluation: Decompressed with a side of balance

Decompressing. That's what I would describe as my mood lately. I've been a wee bit stressed and I'm not exactly sure why. Sure, I can always say work, or lots of events going on outside of work, you know, feeling like I'm always go-go-going. Oh but what about a workout? Laundry? Reading/writing/editing?? But that is the world I live in, chosen indeed. The city I reside in is a fast paced, active place. Naturally, overwhelmed is a quick jump away from any location in these parts. But it is what I hate while loving it too. I think having lived here for eight years now, I find myself more in tune with this city like never before. I no longer get lost on highways or back streets, even in the heart of downtown, mind you. I feel the same sense of familiarity I knew so well from my hometown. Having spent 20 years in that city, now I'm over halfway to half of that here. So, with all that defined, I am tired and stressed out. Stress is a fickle thing, really...
